An Inspector (or two HMIs) Calls!
Out of the mouths…
Unsurprisingly, early reading and phonics became a thread for us but we felt confident we could illustrate our narrative that phonics is a key strategy, however, it is the love of reading that ensures children become engaged and effective learners. As the little troop of Year 4s made their way to their meeting, this was brought to life in the best of ways:
“I love reading….it gets me out of learning”.
Not necessarily entirely reflective of our narrative but it did at least show that whatever the barriers, this vital part of the primary journey is truly appreciated by all.
The marathon and not the sprint…
Like all schools, Boxgrove has been on a decade-long journey and this most recent inspection reinforced our strongly held belief that building habits takes time and it is those embedded habits that make all the difference in the world of continuous school improvement; that and a great curriculum!
For us, personal development and opportunities being held as a central tenet to every aspect of school life makes the difference to children’s views of themselves and of what is possible. How can we find the next world-famous sculptor if we never give them a piece of clay?
Looking back to look forwards…
On the back of last week, we have been reflecting on the inspection experience and what might be next for Boxgrove. Going forwards, what is clear is that we will continue to hold on to our beliefs about what we think primary education should be like for the children we serve and it is they who, as ever, will guide us to the next milestone.

Join Dan Morrow, CEO of Dartmoor Multi Academy Trust, and Harriet Marshall, Head of Education at Lyfta, to delve into what it means to lead on a meaningful and relevant cultural capital education within a multi-academy trust.
The session will explore the concept of cultural capital, in relation to everything from Ofsted’s requirements to the idea of intercultural competence in a fast-changing world. Dan and Harriet will cover the social constructs surrounding cultural capital, as well as impactful curricula and pedagogical strategies to open up the world for all students through deepening their sense of belonging.
The seminar will explore case studies of schools who have developed and implemented powerful cultural (including intercultural) capital curricula, and Dan will discuss the impact that a focus on cultural capital has had on student outcomes across his trust.

An update from Nicola Riley, Head of HR
As you may be aware, Mental Health Awareness week is soon to be upon us, from 13th – 19th May. Mental health and wellbeing is so important, and there are a number of ways the trust can support you if you are facing any challenges.
Our WISDOM app has a wealth of information on it, which will enable you to track your mood, take a mini health check, create a four week health plan and much much more.
You can download the app from the App Store or Google Play by using this QR code
There is evidence of spring arriving with the first glimpses of slightly warmer weather – finally!
Which is great timing for launching our new Cycle to Work Scheme. I have mentioned this before but the scheme has now launched. This scheme enables you to purchase a bike through the employer whilst spreading the cost over a 12 or 18 month period and making savings through tax breaks.
If you want to sign up to this scheme, please speak to your School Business Manager or HR representative in school who will be able to assist you.
To set up your account, you will need our Learning Partners code which is:
MHA093315
To find out more about the app watch this video
Finally, there is a Live Chat feature that allows you to contact a dedicated wellbeing counsellor using live messaging and video calls. This is alongside the traditional helpline which is available 24/7, 365 days a year making it as easy as possible for you to get the right advice when you need it the most.
Education Support also offer resources and support free of charge to anyone who works in education. They can be contacted on 08000 562 561 and offer online chat services as well.
Finally there is a wealth of mental health support and information available on the internet. Reputable sources of help include:
Thank you to everyone who participated in the staff survey last term. We had a great response rate of 62% which is an increase on the last time the survey ran.
Thank you also for all your comments. We are just going through the results at the moment, both at a trust and a school level, and your school’s results will be shared with you in due course.

Meet the Headteachers
Royal Institution Masterclass Series
25 June, 17:00 - 17:45
Online
Keep a look out for SuMS outreach events which are now beginning to take place. The co-headteachers ran a session on 30 April at Holy Trinity Pewley Down School entitled “Where is the Moon”. Yr 5 and 6 pupils from several local primary schools were lucky enough to attend.
Pupils used their maths and physics knowledge to create a scale model of the earth-moon system. A fantastic opportunity to engage primary aged pupils with STEM subjects, ignite their curiosity and work collaboratively with their peers from different settings.
Surrey Maths School are turning their attention to recruitment for September 2025 and will be holding an online event for Year 10 pupils and their parents to meet the co-headteachers and to learn more about life at SuMS. Please promote this event to your keen mathematicians in Year 10.
